Afghan Chon Dog Breed Pictures, Characteristics and Facts

Afghan Chon Overview

The Afghan Chon is a unique, playful mixed breed rising in popularity. This crossbreed is a mix between the elegant Afghan Hound and the fluffy Bichon Frise. This newer cross is sure to keep winning hearts for years to come. They are known for a boisterous personality, along with uniquely curly fur.

The Afghan Chon’s parent breeds are both beloved for many reasons. The Afghan Hound was once a hunting dog, but is now an elegant companion. Althought the Bichon Frise is much smaller, it’s valued both as a show dog and a family pet. The combination is an ideal dog breed for many.

The Afghan Chon’s status as a crossbreed means that they are rarely found up for adoption. Still, there are millions of dogs waiting for homes in shelters. When looking for a specific breed, make an effort to adopt from a shelter or rescue. However, it’s important to keep in mind that given how uncommon the Afghan Chon is, they might not be recognized by shelters and may simply be listed as a mix.

Afghan Chon Highlights

  • The Afghan Chon has a wide variation in size due to its crossbreed nature.
  • The Afghan Chon is known for curly fur that needs routine grooming. Their unique fur gives them a puffball-esque appearance.
  • Afghan Chons can be good fits for almost anyone, and, depending on their size, can be appropriate for apartment living.

Afghan Chon History

Because the Afghan Chon is a mixed breed, they don’t have history as their own breed. Both parent breeds, however, are well known and loved. The Afghan Hound is a large sighthound originating from Afghanistan. Once used to hunt speedy prey like rabbits and gazelle, today they are more likely to burn their energy off in a sporting event like agility. The Bichon Frise is a small breed known for placing well in competitions. They have been around for much longer than most breeds — the first documentation of their existence comes from the 14th century.

Afghan Chon Size

Than most breeds – the first documentation of their existence comes from the 14th century.

The Afghan Chon’s size can vary greatly. As the Bichon Frise is a small breed and the Afghan Hound a large breed, their offspring can be any variation in between. Typically, the Afghan Chon somewhat favors the Bichon Frise in size. They are likely to be small or medium in size. They can be found in a variety of colors but are often variations of tan.

Afghan Chon Personality

The Afghan Chon often suffers from separation anxiety. This means that they are often best suited for a lifestyle where a dog parent is with them often. They may enjoy going to a dog-friendly workplace, or simply keeping a work-at-home family member company.

Afghan Chons are often good-natured and loving with their families. With that in mind, it’s still a good idea to work on socialization from a young age. Bichon Frises can be nippy at times, so it’s important to make sure this tendency is not passed on to the Afghan Chon.

Afghan Chon Health

While Afghan Chons originating from responsible breeders are often healthy, there are some genetic predispositions towards health issues to be aware of with this crossbreed.

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Obesity
  • Hot Spots
  • Cataracts

Afghan Chon Care

The Afghan Chon needs regular exercise, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be strenuous. Smaller members of the breed are likely content with a half-hour walk daily; larger Afghan Chons can have this time upped. While this breed can be good for apartment living, if not exercised, they may become noisy. It’s important to provide proper stimulation to encourage good behavior.

Afghan Chon Feeding

The Afghan Chon should typically be fed a diet consistent with that of a small breed with medium energy levels. To provide additional stimulation for this breed, consider foraging opportunities like a snuffle mat or filled bone. Because all dogs are unique in their diet requirements, it’s best to consult your veterinarian to determine the best food to feed your pup.

Afghan Chon Coat Color And Grooming

The Afghan Chon’s coat needs regular maintenance. Their curly coats are prone to matting, which can cause skin issues if left unchecked. Brushing should be done several times a week. Bathing is to be done on an as-needed basis, rarely more than once a month. For dog parents who are too busy for regular grooming, consideration should be given to routine dog grooming visits. If seeking out a new puppy, it’s a good idea to get your new friend used to a dog toothbrush at a young age, as dental issues are common in older dogs. As with all dog breeds, be sure to check on nail maintenance.

Afghan Chon Children And Other Pets

There are some factors to consider before adding the Afghan Chon to your family. The breed is often good with older children. Their playful natures and curiosity make them a great fit for most kids. However, they can be hyper, meaning that kids under the age of five run the risk of being bowled over or jumped on. Additionally, kids who aren’t familiar with handling dogs may irritate the dog and receive a nip.  Although this breed isn’t known for being aggressive with small pets, never leave your pup unattended or let them play with a small pet such as a hamster, as they may injure them without intending to.

Afghan Chon Rescue Groups

There are no breed-specific rescues for the Afghan Chon, as they are a mixed breed. However, you can often find similar mixes up for adoption. Breed-specific rescues for the Afghan Hound or Bichon Frise often rehome mixed breeds, so one of these may be a great option. Consider rescuing a similar fit if you are unable to find an Afghan Chon. There are many small dogs, particularly seniors, needing homes. Whatever the circumstances, try opening your home to a rescue pup.
